Question: What's the difference between VGA and SVGA? Can I use one in place on the other.
Answer: VGA and SVGA are terms coined by IBM. They stand for Video Graphics Array and Super Video Graphics Array. They refer to a video RGBHV video signal format and each represent specific video resolutions. They have since become generic terms referring to the signal format without regard to the actual resolutions. With regard to cables, VGA refers to a standard gauge cable used for short distances while SVGA refers to thicker more heavy duty cables that can support higher resolutions and longer cable runs.
Question: Is VGA compatible with DVI?
Answer: VGA is compatible with DVI-I and DVI-A, both of which support analog signals and use the same RGBHV format as VGA. However, DVI-D handles digital signal only and would not be compatbile or adaptable to VGA.
Question: Is VGA compatible with HDMI?
Answer: No, HDMI is a purely digital signal. VGA is analog so you can not adapt one to the other.
Question: Is VGA compatible with Component.
Answer: No, while both are analog video signal, VGA is a RGBHV signal format while component is Y, Pr, Pb. They are not adapter with one another.
Question: Is this the same cable that is referred to as DB15, RGB, or PC Input in my manual?
Answer: Yes, VGA connectors are referred to by many names by different manufacturers, most of these being inacurrately used. However, if the connector on your device consists of 3 row of 5 offset pin holes (HD15 connector), then a VGA/SVGA cable would be the correct one to use.
