Default Mini Displayport Adapters FAQ

Q: Can you make a mini displayport adapter with female on both ends so that I can hookup my computer with VGA, DVI, or HDMI output to the new Apple Cinema LCD Display using the current male mini displayport adapters you are selling?

A: Actually yes we can make this adapter. The problem though is that the current mini displayport adapters only work in one direction, with mini displayport as the source. As such this adapter won't work for this purpose.

Q: Can you create longer versions of your mini displayport extension cable?

A: Yes, we just finished some testing at 15 feet of the 32 AWG cable and it passed, we are also working on 28 AWG cable which should work at much longer lengths. If you need some custom lengths of any of our mini displayport cables just e-mail us and we'll let you know if we have any on the way or if we can create them.

Q: Is there a solution for my DVI Apple computer to connect to a Mini Displayport monitor?

A: As of right now there is no solution, we are working on it though. We definitely think it is possible and as soon as we have a solution to this problem we will announce it.

Q: I have a Mac with mini displayport output but I have an older monitor that only has DVI, how can I get the full 2560x1600 dual link resolution?

A: Currently the only adapter that we know of that can do this is the Apple dual link adapter. We only let customers know about this and also tell them that we have seen bad reviews about it so we can't recommend that it will work. Although, at this point, its the only option.

Q: I have a PC with Displayport output but I want to use the new Apple Cinema LCD Display, do you have a cable for this?

A: Yes, we currently have a cable with part number H713020 that will be able to do this type of connection. We just sent out a beta version of this cable to a customer for testing to make sure that there won't be a problem between the Mac/PC cross platform application.

Q: I have a PC with displayport output and I want to use a DVI display but I want to use dual link resolution, is there any solution?

A: Some users have suggested using our H713020 cable in combination with the Apple Dual Link adapter. We have sent out one of our cables to a user for testing this exact application. The concern we have is that Apple states on their product information that the dual link adapter is only compatible with Mac OS and Mac computers so we aren't sure if the adapter will work with its full functionality when used with a PC source.

>>> I know it's only been a month since this post... is there an estimated time frame when such an adapter could be made available?

Thanks!

I'd be ok with single link. I just want to be able to use the 24" LCD with my Macbook pro that has a DVI output.

Please update me when or if this is going to be available. If you were to set a time line, when do you think it may be? Is there a way to do a preorder so that right when it's done it ships out?

Thanks!

Hi guys.

I think we will start allowing pre-orders sometime in August. I just received very good news that the PCB is currently under development and we will have a drawing and a mockup design by August 1st. Once I have those I will post them all here so people can observe what we are creating. I should also have a rough idea of the price and will post that. Once we have a confirmed delivery date on these adapters I will probably promise to ship them a few weeks after that date just to be sure that we will have it done and then people will be able to pre-order them on our site.

Regards,
Andrew

Default Update

Hello all,

I just received some 3D model photos of the products design from our engineers. The way it will work is it will have a female mini displayport and female USB on one end with a male usb cable and male dvi cable coming out the other end to connect to the computer.

The adapter will need the power via the USB to work. On the female side you can use the USB on the adapter to connect a USB device.

The adapter will be single link in this first iteration. A full size displayport version may also be available.

As soon as I have the photos I will create a new thread for this particular topic and post all future updates there.

Dear Andrew,
So glad i found this forum as I think this may be where I find my answer (and product).

I have a brand new macbook pro with a MINI displayport socket.
I want to run dual monitors from this and have the two monitors connected by dvi cable and HDMI cable to this adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O2C2S6/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

HOWEVER......the displayport connector on this adapter is the old standard size one for old macs. Too big.

Is the "male mini to standard size female connector" that you sell:

http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Male-Mini-Displayport-to-Female-Displayport-Adapter-Cable.html#

the answer??, ie can I plug in the standard size displayport of my duo adapter to this and then plug it's min end into my new macbook???

hope springs eternal :-)

many thanks if you can help, and if so, the order is redy to go.

I feel I have to be the bearer of bad news. That adapter you want to use is mini dvi not full size displayport. One thing you could try is mini displayport to dvi. Then dvi to mini dvi. Then your chosen adapter. We have those first two adapters on our site. Although I'm not certain this would work, in theory it xould. I'm sure you could find a better solution like a mini displayport to hdmi then an hdmi splitter.

If you have any further questions on the solution let us know. Customerservice@estore.circuitassembly.com is a great way to contact us and we have products that may not be listed on our website at the moment.

Default thanks andrew

thanks for the reply andrew

Boy am I confused now ;-) This cable world is a nightmare!!!

Now I'm thinking that if I bought a mini-displayport to HDMI cable, THEN bought this one that I found online,

I could plug the mini displayport into the macbook then this one into it, then finally the two monitors into it via their hdmi and dvi cables.

convoluted but would this give me my dual monitor st up do you think?

cheers and thanks for a most helpful service

Philip
